A new study has ranked the 100 safest cities in the United States, and Massachusetts is home to nearly 20 percent of them.
The real-estate data organization Neighborhood Scout compiled the list based on American cities that have populations of at least 25,000 people. It then analyzed the rate of property and violent crimes reported to the FBI per 1,000 citizens. Its resulting data show the safest–and least safe–cities in the country.
Ranking Massachusetts cities
A total of 19 Bay-State towns and cities made the list. In fact, the top five safest cities in the country include three from Massachusetts. The cities of Franklin, Lexington and Shrewsbury rank third, fourth and fifth safest, respectively. Massachusetts had more cities on the list than any other state in the U.S.
Conversely, the study also ranked the 100 most dangerous cities in the nation. Neighborhood Scout evaluated the same data and compiled a list of the country’s most dangerous places to live. Six Massachusetts cities made it into the list. These include Salisbury, Chelsea, Springfield, Brockton, Holyoke and Fall River, in descending order.
The year 2017 had one of the lowest crime rates in recent memory, but the crime statistics for 2018 have yet to be seen. While it is comforting that 19 of our state’s cities are ranked among the highest nationally for safety, it is disconcerting that several of our cities also rank for their high crime rates. It is also important to note that crime is not limited to the six cities on “Most Dangerous” list. Crime is prevalent throughout Massachusetts, and frequently results in criminal charges.
