What will it take to get my license back after an OUI?

Drunk driving comes with a host of serious penalties, some of which can have an impact that reaches into various areas of your life. From your financial well-being to your right to drive, there is much at stake. One of the most frustrating of these is your loss of driving privileges, a consequence that can affect both your career and your personal life.

You must have a valid driver’s license in order to transport yourself to school, work or even go to the grocery store. Public transportation may not meet your individual needs, and the loss of your license after an OUI is much more than an inconvenience. You would be wise to know how to get your license back and what you must do at the end of your suspension period.

How much will it cost?

The suspension or revocation of your license or learner’s permit can be quite costly, and not just because of the inconvenience that it could have upon your life. Once you are able to get your license back, you may have to pay various costly fees to complete the process. The fees you will be responsible for depend on the nature of your individual case. Some of these may include:

  • Refusal to take chemical test, $500
  • Failed Breathalyzer test, $500
  • First-time OUI, $500
  • Second OUI, $700
  • Third or fourth OUI, $1,200

These are just a few of the various fees associated with license reinstatement in Massachusetts. If you are underage or driving on a learner’s permit, your fees could be different. If drug offenses or other extenuating circumstances factor into your case, the amount and type of fees could be different or even more expensive.

Understanding your individual case and rights

You would be prudent to seek to completely understand the nature of the charges against you, including what you may have to do in order to get your license back. This preparedness can save you a significant amount of time and stress as you pursue the best possible outcome to your OUI case and the restoration of your driving privileges.

Building a strong defense

Your future and freedom are too important to leave to chance after a drunk driving arrest. You would be wise to start building a strong defense as soon as possible, even if it is your first OUI. Protecting your right to drive is essential, as are the many other personal rights at risk when facing this type of criminal charge.
