Massachusetts man charged with trafficking drugs valued at $300k

Following a lengthy investigation, law enforcement authorities detained a Springfield man after reportedly finding over $300,000 worth of heroin and cocaine in his home. Officers with the Springfield Police Department apprehended the man on Dec. 19.

According to reports, officers sought and obtained a search warrant for the man's home. Upon execution of the warrant, they allegedly found heroin, cocaine, $58,000 in cash, handguns, drug paraphernalia and marijuana. The 31-year-old man was held in custody without bond following his arrest.

Officers claimed they had reason to believe the man was selling drugs from his house. The amount of cocaine seized in the raid was over 10 pounds. The man reportedly had 2,700 bags of heroin as well. He was charged with cocaine trafficking, heroin trafficking and weapons offenses.

Drug trafficking cases often involve long investigations that can extend over several months. In some cases, undercover detectives and confidential informants may be used to make controlled buys from the alleged suspect. Officers then may use these controlled buys in order to obtain a search warrant to search the home of the defendant. However, police might need to have probable cause in order to support the issuance of a search warrant.

Once a search warrant is issued, officers will then search the home, often arriving without warning. People who are inside of the home may be apprehended if any drugs or other illegal items are discovered. Those who are charged with drug offenses may benefit from consulting with a criminal defense attorney. When an attorney is able to start work on a case early on, he or she is better able to locate witnesses and conduct the defense investigation before leads run cold. This may be important in mounting a successful defense.
