Massachusetts man charged with beating man in bar

A Germantown man has been arrested for allegedly beating a man unconscious in a Quincy bar on March 23. Prosecutors said the victim is not expected to live.

Witnesses to the attack told authorities that the victim had just entered the Home Ice Sports Bar in Quincy Center when the defendant left his seat at the bar and punched him with a right hook. Once the victim was on the ground, the defendant allegedly stomped on his head and dragged his unconscious body through the bar's kitchen and out the back door. The beating was reportedly unprovoked. The victim, a 42-year-old father of two, was critically injured. His family reports he was taken off life support on March 30 and is not expected to survive.

The defendant was taken into custody in the area of Sea Street and Palmer Street on March 26. Authorities said he had a 5-inch sheath knife on him at the time of his arrest. He was charged in Quincy District Court with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and assault and battery causing serious bodily injury.

Even when bar fights such as this one are initially described by witnesses as unprovoked, evidence may eventually show there were extenuating circumstances that led to the altercation. A defendant facing assault charges may wish to immediately retain a criminal defense attorney to review the evidence in the case for any discrepancies or inconsistencies. Legal counsel could also review police conduct during the arrest for any indication authorities violated the defendant's civil rights. In some cases, the attorney may attempt to negotiate an arrangement with the prosecutor in which the defendant would plead guilty to a lesser charge in exchange for having the more serious charges dismissed.
