Drug charges follow minor Massachusetts traffic accident

Two Massachusetts residents from Pembroke were scheduled to spend Valentine's Day in criminal court. Their problems began when they were involved in a local motor vehicle accident. As a result of the subsequent police investigation, the 27-year-old male driver and 28-year-old female passenger were arrested on drug charges.

While there were no significant injuries from the collision, police say the man was driving without a valid license. They also assert that he was driving negligently and committed a marked lanes violation. Both the male driver and his female passenger were apparently searched, though no reason was offered to explain why the passenger was searched. Nevertheless, authorities say they discovered drugs in the possession of both individuals.

Massachusetts authorities did not disclose the specific drugs said to have been seized. Instead, they indicated the investigation was ongoing. Both people were also arrested on drug charges. The driver is accused of having a Class A drug, and the passenger of having a Class E drug. In addition, the passenger was also charged with a subsequent possession of Class A, B and C drugs.

As these drug charges head to a Massachusetts courtroom, those charged must focus on their criminal defense as well as prepare to defend themselves in connection with any further police investigation. A conviction on any drug offense could expose an individual to jail or other serious consequences. The stakes are obviously higher for those who have been convicted of drug crimes in the past. Even so, each accused person is considered innocent in the eyes of the law unless and only if a prosecutor can prove beyond a reasonable doubt that they are actually guilty of the crimes with which they have been charged.
